5 Practices for a Cleaner and Happier Home

Making a house a home is all about what you put into it. Taking a few extra minutes in your day to keep things tidy and neat may not seem like all that much, but it can have a great impact on your health and happiness. Adopting a few simple practices can greatly improve the quality of your life and your home. We promise, it won’t take up much of your time and you’ll be very glad that you did!

  1. Open the Window. As trivial as it sounds, just opening the window can really help a home feel fresh! Letting in fresh air circulate makes the whole house crisp and refreshing, while eliminating odors and ventilating the area. Open the window for a few hours every day to keep your house smelling and feeling clean.

  2. Let the Sun Shine. While you’re opening those windows, why not let in some sunshine? Sunlight not only warms up a room, it’s also a powerful disinfectant. Don’t believe us? Check out this blog on How to Clean Water with Sunlight (http://modernsurvivalblog.com/health/how-to-purify-water-with-sunlight/) and see for yourself!

  3. A Place for Everything… and everything in its place! Putting things away immediately after each use is a great way to ensure that the mess never happens in the first place! It takes a lot less time than cleaning up a big pile of stuff later, too. Hang coats as soon as you walk in the door, and don’t let that empty soda bottle sit on the floor when chances are a trash can is only a few feet away.

  4. Clean as You Go. The same principle for putting things away immediately applies to cleaning as you go. If you do it now, it will be a lot easier than procrastinating and cleaning once things have accumulated. Wipe down surfaces after each use, do dishes immediately, and do the laundry before it starts spilling out of the bag.

  5. Keep the Floor Clean. If you’ve got a clean floor, then you’ve already won half the battle. When the floor is clean, you’re less likely to track dirt and grime throughout the house. Take your shoes off when you enter the home, sweep and vacuum regularly, and don’t let garbage or clothing pile up. Pushing things to the side to create a walkway is not the same thing as having a clean floor!
